Resolute in Readiness (Part 6)

Sunday message.

In place of the recording, here is a basic summary of the message.

The New Testament speaks with certainty about the return of Jesus Christ. Scripture doesn’t invite us to calculate dates or decode world events; instead, it calls believers to live with steady anticipation and daily readiness. In 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11, Paul reminds the church that the Day of the Lord will come suddenly and unmistakably. Because of that reality, Christians are meant to live with clarity, confidence, and purpose.

Paul begins by shifting our attention away from speculation. The return of Christ is not something we predict—it is something we prepare for. Rather than anxiously mapping out timelines, believers are called to focus on what will happen when Jesus returns: the fulfillment of God’s promises, the finality of His judgment, and the completion of our salvation.

This leads to a second emphasis: spiritual alertness. Paul describes believers as “children of light,” people who do not stumble in darkness but remain awake, sober, and aware. Readiness is not frantic or fearful; it is steady, thoughtful, and rooted in who we are in Christ. To live alertly is to cultivate faith, love, and hope in the ordinary rhythms of life—choosing habits and attitudes that reflect our identity as people who belong to the day.

Finally, Paul turns our attention outward. The hope of Christ’s return is not meant to isolate us but to strengthen the church. As we wait, we are called to encourage one another, to build each other up, and to help fellow believers remain steady in faith. Anticipation becomes a shared experience, shaping a community marked by confidence rather than panic, love rather than fear.

The return of Jesus is certain. For those who belong to Him, it is not a day of dread but a day of salvation. Living in readiness means embracing that hope daily—walking in the light, remaining spiritually awake, and strengthening one another as we look forward to the fulfillment of God’s promises.
